Know before you go

Race weekend, mapped out

Tarawera is not a race where everyone starts and finishes in the same place. Here is what to know ahead of race week.

When to arrive

Thursday to Monday

Our accommodation begins Thursday 11 February, when check-in and the expo open at Village Green. We recommend arriving Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning, so you have time to settle before check-in continues through Friday. T102 athletes can still be on course Sunday, so we recommend booking through to Monday rather than Sunday.

The hub

Village Green, Rotorua lakefront

Check-in, the expo, drop bags, most athlete buses and the finish all happen here. Our accommodation and group plans are built around staying close to the lakefront, so race morning has fewer moving parts.

Race morning

Different start, same finish

T50 starts at Te Puia, T21 starts at Lake Tikitapu, and T102 starts around an hour away in Kawerau. Athlete buses run from central Rotorua, with published 2027 shuttle prices of NZ$10 for T21/T50 and NZ$20 for the T102. All distances finish back at the lakefront.

Check-in

Bring photo ID, sort it early

Race packs are not posted ahead of time. You collect your own, with photo ID, at Village Green. We aim to have Her Trails athletes checked in and organised before race morning wherever possible, so nothing is left to the last minute.

If they're coming too

What spectators can and can't do

Spectators can't drive to every aid station. The event runs dedicated spectator buses, and some course sections are closed to private vehicles. T14 and T21 athletes can't receive material support from spectators on course, worth knowing before family build a big race-day plan.

Download the official Tarawera Ultra-Trail by UTMB app before you travel. It carries the current schedule, course maps and race information, and it's useful for anyone following you from home too.

What this actually is

This is not a tour package

A tour operator can book your accommodation and organise your transfers. That is useful, but it is not what the Pinnacle Event is for.

The Pinnacle Event connects the things that actually matter to a runner: the training block you have put in, the coaching that got you here, the women you have trained alongside, shared accommodation, practical start-line logistics, support across the weekend, and crossing the finish at Village Green with your community there to see it. That is the difference between a package and an experience.

Bringing people along

Family and friends can join you

The Pinnacle Event Package is built for the athlete, and we can facilitate family members or friends who want to be there in Rotorua to support you. Let us know who is coming when you get in touch, and we will talk you through the options.
