What the course demands

Runner 1: Legs 1 and 2
Anglesea to Torquay and back
49km / 1,080m elevation
 
  • Pre-dawn start in cool coastal conditions
  • Clifftop singletrack along the Surf Coast Walk
  • Beach and boardwalk sections requiring sand efficiency
  • Wind exposure on coastal cliff sections
Runner 2: Legs 3 and 4
Anglesea to Moggs Creek and back
51km / 1,205m elevation
 
  • Relay handover start, warming conditions mid-morning
  • Remote coastal bushland and Currawong Falls section
  • Flowing Otway singletrack and 2WD and 4WD tracks
  • Longer Leg 3 at 27km requiring conservative early pacing

Training Approach

How this program prepares you

Rather than simply building endurance, this program develops the durability, pacing control and terrain awareness required to run your relay leg efficiently and support your team on race day. Both runners follow the same 20-week structure, with coaching notes specific to each leg built into the program.

Endurance
Progressive long runs building to your relay leg distance, with coastal terrain specificity through Phase 3.
Strength
Integrated strength and mobility sessions to protect joints, improve climbing power and maintain form across a long leg.
Fuelling
Race-day nutrition and hydration strategy introduced early and practised through every long run so it feels automatic by race day.
Mental Skills
Her Trails mental frameworks built into the program across 20 weeks, including relay-specific pacing and handover preparation.
