kunanyi Mountain Run 25km
Program for Women
14 weeks of structured, expert-led trail training built for the kunanyi Mountain Run 25km in nipaluna/Hobart. Short on distance, relentless on climbing: 1,560m of ascent packed into 25km, finishing on one of the most exposed summits in the country. Every session scales to the runner you are right now, whether this is your first mountain race or your tenth.
The Race
Running the kunanyi Mountain Run 25km
The kunanyi Mountain Run 25km climbs from the streets of nipaluna/Hobart to the pinnacle of kunanyi/Mt Wellington and back down. You head out along Old Farm Road and the Main Fire Trail, drop into the singletrack of Myrtle Gully Track, then work through Junction Cabin and Hunters Track to the Chalet. From there the course takes in the Organ Pipes track and the Zig Zag climb to the summit, before a long descent through Radfords and Fern Glade. The organisers count around nine completely different landscape types in a single lap.
There is 1,560m of climbing in 25km, and the same again on the way down. That is over 60m of ascent for every kilometre you cover, which puts this well beyond a standard trail race of the same distance. The terrain moves from wet fern gullies and eucalypt forest to dolerite boulder fields and exposed alpine plateau above the treeline.
March is generally the most settled weather month of the year in Hobart, but the summit sits at roughly 1,270m and runs far colder than the city, with wind chill on top. Warm in town does not mean warm up high. The sustained climbing, the technical descending and the alpine exposure all reward specific preparation. This program builds exactly that.

Who This Is For
Built for women of all abilities
This is a demanding course, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What we can tell you is that the training scales. Every run in this program is prescribed by effort and time rather than pace, so the same session works whether you are covering six kilometres in an hour or eleven. Where volume needs to flex around your body, your work or your week, there is a shorter option written in rather than left for you to guess at.
Power hiking is trained here as a skill, not treated as a fallback. On a course averaging over 60m of climbing per kilometre, the strongest runners in the field will hike the steepest pitches too. The race also carries generous cut-offs, which leaves genuine room for a steady, sustainable day on the mountain.
New to the mountains
This may be your first race with serious vert, or your first move from road to trail. You will start with foot and ankle durability and a hiking base, then build climbing gradually across the full 14 weeks.
Returning or rebuilding
Coming back from injury, illness, a long break or postpartum. Reduced-volume options run alongside the main plan, and the strength and mobility work is there to support the return rather than rush it.
Experienced and racing it
You have run this distance before and want a time. Extended peak sessions, race-specific vert targets and descending work give you somewhere to put the extra capacity.
