The Race

Running the Standley Monster

The 65km Standley Monster journeys through some of the most spectacular and runnable sections of the Larapinta Trail. It starts in the pre-dawn dark with a head-torch start at Angkerle Atwatye (Standley Chasm), climbs steep, rugged, technical terrain for the first 13km, then opens into remote undulating singletrack with almost non-stop views of the West MacDonnell Ranges. Aid stations are spaced for a remote desert ultra, at Jay Creek (13km), Mulga Camp (22km), Simpsons Gap (40km) and Wallaby Gap (50km), before Euro Ridge delivers a final sting in the tail roughly 13km from the historic Alice Springs Telegraph Station finish.

It is a point-to-point course with around 1,630m of climbing and 1,820m of descent across red-dirt singletrack, rocky creek beds and exposed ridgelines (ITRA 3 points, Mountain Level 2). Held in mid-May, race day falls in the cool, dry heart of the Central Australian autumn, with crisp pre-dawn starts near 7°C and mild days around 20–23°C.

This is a feisty, remote ultra that rewards strength, sure footing and patience. The terrain, the climbs and the distance all ask for specific preparation. This program builds exactly that.

Please note: entry to the 65km Standley Monster requires a qualifying trail race (21.1km or longer) completed within 18 months of the event. This program is built to get you ready for it.
